What Is NursingCAS and Why It Matters
NursingCAS is the centralized application service for graduate nursing programs, operated by Liaison International. If you are applying to CRNA school, there is a strong chance your target programs use NursingCAS as their primary application portal. Over 53 COA-accredited nurse anesthesia programs currently use NursingCAS, including many of the most competitive programs in the country.
Unlike applying directly to each program, NursingCAS lets you build one core application and designate multiple programs at once. However, NursingCAS is not a one-and-done form it requires careful preparation, early document gathering, and a clear understanding of how the portal works before you start filling it in.
How NursingCAS Works: The Application Process Step by Step
Create Your NursingCAS Account Early
Go to nursingcas.org and create your account as soon as the new cycle opens (typically in the spring). Explore every section of the portal before you start filling anything in. This helps you understand what is required and catch any surprises like prerequisite course matching or supplemental essay prompts before crunch time.
Identify Your Target Programs and Their Deadlines
Before building your application, know exactly which programs you are applying to. Each program has its own deadline within NursingCAS. Some programs use rolling admissions meaning earlier is better regardless of the posted deadline. Use the checklist tool below to pull up per-program requirements for every NursingCAS program.
Order Official Transcripts Immediately
NursingCAS requires official transcripts from every college and university you have attended even if you only took one course there. Transcripts must be sent directly from the institution to NursingCAS, either electronically or by mail. Order all transcripts as soon as you decide to apply. Processing and delivery can take 2 to 4 weeks per institution, and your application cannot be verified without them.
Request Letters of Recommendation
Most CRNA programs require 3 letters of recommendation submitted through NursingCAS. The best recommenders are your ICU manager or charge nurse, a supervising physician or CRNA who has observed your clinical work, and an academic or professional contact who can speak to your intellectual capacity. Ask at least 6 to 8 weeks before your earliest deadline and give each recommender your personal statement, CV, and a brief note on why you chose them.
Write and Polish Your Personal Statement
NursingCAS includes a personal statement field (typically 500 to 1,000 words) used by most programs as their primary written statement. Some programs also have supplemental essays in their own portals that you complete separately after designating them in NursingCAS. Start drafting your personal statement 2 to 3 months before your deadline. Have at least two people review it ideally someone currently in or recently graduated from CRNA school.
Review, Verify, and Submit Before the Deadline
Once you submit your NursingCAS application, most fields cannot be edited. Review every section carefully before hitting submit. After submission, NursingCAS must verify your application this process can take 2 to 4 weeks and requires all transcripts to be received. Factor this into your timeline so that verification completes before the program deadline, not just submission.
How NursingCAS Calculates Your GPA
NursingCAS recalculates your GPA using its own standardized formula, which may differ from your school-reported GPA. This is important to understand before you apply. NursingCAS calculates four GPA figures: cumulative GPA (all college coursework), science GPA (biology, chemistry, physics and related courses), prerequisite GPA (courses matching each program requirements), and nursing GPA (nursing-specific courses).
One critical detail: NursingCAS includes repeated courses differently than some schools. If you retook a class, both the original and retaken grade may appear in the GPA calculation depending on the course and institution. Use the NursingCAS GPA estimator tool and our GPA Calculator to get a realistic picture of your NursingCAS GPA before you submit.
The 5 Most Common NursingCAS Mistakes
Starting Too Late
The most common mistake. Transcripts take weeks. Letters take months. Starting in August for a September deadline is a recipe for an incomplete application.
Missing a Transcript
Forgot that community college English class from 2015? NursingCAS requires transcripts from every institution. Missing even one will delay or invalidate your application.
Submitting Without Proofreading
Once submitted, most fields lock. A misspelled name, wrong graduation date, or vague personal statement cannot be fixed. Review every section before you hit submit.
Ignoring Supplemental Requirements
Many programs have secondary application portals, CASPer assessments, or Kira video interviews on top of NursingCAS. Check every program portal after you designate them do not assume NursingCAS is all there is.
Confusing Submission with Completion
Submitting your application does not mean it is complete. NursingCAS must verify it, all transcripts must arrive, and letters of recommendation must be submitted. Check your status regularly.
NursingCAS Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply to non-NursingCAS programs at the same time?
Yes. Many CRNA programs do not use NursingCAS and have their own direct application portals. You can apply to both NursingCAS programs and direct-apply programs simultaneously just track each program deadlines and requirements separately. Use the Compass tool to see which programs use NursingCAS and which do not.
Does NursingCAS carry over between application cycles?
NursingCAS does not fully carry over from cycle to cycle. Each new cycle requires a fresh application. However, some information from a previous cycle may be importable. If you are reapplying, start early and review what needs to be updated especially your personal statement, CV, and any outdated certification or employment information.
What is the NursingCAS ETS code for GRE scores?
The NursingCAS GRE institution code is 7548. When sending GRE scores from ETS, use this code to route them to NursingCAS rather than to individual programs. GRE scores can take 2 to 3 weeks to arrive after sending, so plan accordingly if your target programs require them. Many programs have dropped GRE requirements always verify with each program directly.
How much does NursingCAS cost?
NursingCAS charges approximately $75 for your first program designation and $45 for each additional program. Some programs also charge their own secondary application fees on top of the NursingCAS fee. Budget for this when planning how many programs to apply to.
When does the NursingCAS application cycle open?
The NursingCAS cycle typically opens in late spring (April to June) for programs with fall deadlines. However, program deadlines vary widely some close as early as September, others not until February. Check each program deadline individually. Do not assume all programs follow the same schedule.
